Early Start This Year Paid Off in large dividends!
As a lifelong gardener, I know the importance of starting to weed early. I discovered last year that this holds true of the water chestnut weeding. I gathered some interesting statistics that illuminate just how much more productive early weeding efforts are in comparison to weeding in July: What I could hand pull in 4 hours in early May, would take more than 40 hours to pull in July -- with a great deal more physical effort (and muddy clothing)...
Help Us at a Hand Pulling Event
The Charles River Watershed Association and Charles River Canoe and Kayak partner to organize volunteers to hand pull water chestnuts each summer. Get down and dirty, have fun, make new friends and make a difference!
If time is a challenge...please consider making a donation
Every dollar helps keep our mechanical harvester going -- and supports the volunteer program at large. Your donations can help with composting, gloves, rakes, baskets, bottled water and snacks for the volunteers.
Host a Neighborhood Pull Party
Fellow residents, can you host a Hand-Pulling Party in your neighborhood? With a little direction and support, we believe that the awesome volunteers will have a greater impact working the river in and near our neighborhood!
What’s involved: 1) an initial planning meeting,
2) committing to 1-2 hand-pulling events of 3-4 hour duration between mid-May and early August, and
3) outreach to your local neighbors to see if they can help out too!
